Dheere se jaana Bagiyan mein

Recently, i got to download a private song composed and sung by S.D.Burman. the song "Dheere se Jaana Bagiyan mein", was/is one of the rare songs, yet famous, in his illustrious career and this one, in particular, is from the early stage of his career.
There is nothing new to write about S.D.Burman's rendition as he was one of the most accomplished composer-singers in that era.For me, he was not only a great composer but also a great singer.he had a characteristic style of his own,..the nasal twang and unconventional gamakams.he had a typical Boat-man kind of voice..perfectly suitable for folk-baul kind of ballads.and his rendition was always flawless.Lata Mangeshkar herself mentioned many times that she(and other singers) always had tough time singing exactly like him and have given up many times. He sang many private songs , some of which are popular and most of them..lying in some cans today..somewhere..probably All India Radio.
Though this song "dheere se jaana" is a private song, it is very popular. the 1st time i heard this song was in "chalthi ka naam gaadi". in the song " paanch rupaiyya baarah anaa", kishore kumar suddenly breaks into "dheere se jaana" , imitating the characteristic style of SDB(the nasal twang and all). Incidentally, the music for chalthi ka naam gaadi was scored by SDB himself. isnt it strange that Kishore had the audacity to mock at SDB under the baton of SDB.well, only kishore had such liberty with SDB( as SDB was his godfather). Kishore Kumar idolised artists like Saigal, SDB, before coming into films and there are many songs in which he imitated them adding his own touch of humor."paanch rupaiyya" was one such brilliant composition by SDB.

years after, in 1973...same kishore kumar teamed up with SDB's son Rahul Dev Burman to recreate same punch, using same tune. and both of them dished out "dheere se jaana khatiyan mein" in the movie "chupa rustom". this time, Kishore Kumar sings it in his own style..the weighty voice reverbed...but the tribute to SDB was inevitable...the rendition of last line, in this version, is truly SDBurman-ish. S.D.Burman might have chuckled , listening to that.
but for me, getting the original version of this gem brought more joy. The rendition of S.D.Burman, in this song, as always, is par excellence.
try to get it, if you can...

The best comic song for me! I zimbly love "paanch rupaiyya..."

In the first stanza, he becomes Majnu (I dont know if its from laila-majnu)
"khoon-e-dil peeneko aur lakhte jigar khaaneko, yeh sazaah milthe hai laila tere deewane ko"

and then in the last one, he becomes a jogi--
"teri gatri mein laagaa chor musafir jaag zaraa, tu jaag zara"

I think the entire 'chalti ka naam gaadi' sound-track was one major party for SDB...laughing at himself, loosing up the traditionality of contemporary music, allowing Kishore (till then a vastly under-explored singer) enough rope to hang himself...
It's amazing to listen to all its songs...but the one particular song that has held my attention is the song "Hum the woh thi aur sama rangeen". Especially the stanzas - they feel like they are all floating in the air, with no connection between the lines, but magically it returns to the original sruti and comes together. It perfectly captures the elation that a car-mechanic would feel after a romantic encounter with Madhubala. Also note Manna dey's willingness to be dominated by Kishore in that song.

ha ha..good one kedar!! but really, thats one phenomenal album..who can forget "ek ladki bheegi bhaagee si"..the weight in kishore's voice..
and paanch rupaiyya, as u said..is kishore's arena..actually, there are many such funny songs by kishore..in various films..infac, he made them into a genre..which is absent these days..ofcourse..there is no one like kishore these days..

that was the era of "innocent masti". There was a kind of fragrance in the air. Movies of Dev Anand also exude this characteristic innocence.. for example: "tere ghar ke saamne".

During good old glorious Doordarshan days, when life was far more mellow and meaningful, this amazing movie was telecast. And how they did it, in 3 parts !!!with half an hour each of NEWS in between, all adding up to about 5-6 hours. But did we not stay back, wait and watch it till it was over?

Heartfelt thanks to Kamal Aakarsh for bringing back memories not gone yet.

Hi.. WHen I heard the kishore version (Dheere se jaana khatiyan mey O Khatmal..) I didn't realize SDB had sung the original. I heard the original once on Vividh Bharathi on the day SDB passed away..

If you can point me to the source, I would dearly love to download this, and glad to pay for it.

Posting this comment on an old post, but hopefully this thing emails it to you so it will get read :)

Dheere se jaana khatiyan mein, re khatmal from the movie Chhupa Rustom (1973) has music by S D Burman himself, and not R D Burman. The ode to SDB by Kishore still holds true, and RDB assisted SDB on pretty much all his films post-1969 so the influence of RDB is likely to be there, but still, officially, Chhupa Rustom is papa-Burman's.

Just thought you'd like to know :)

A lovely song. Much happiness that it got featured in a post here.

That is right. SDB himself allowed KK to mock him in Chhupa Rustam and earlier Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi. Some of you may not know, SDB had a great sense of humuor.
